I don’t know about you, but I always want to de-clutter and purge before the Christmas holiday. It just feels right to let go of the old and unused to make room for the new and useful items that may come your way. So, this year I am taking my family on a major de-cluttering adventure, the Konmari way!
If you have never heard of the Konmari method of de-cluttering, here it is:
It is a method developed by Marie Kondo, a Japanese Organizational Consultant, and best-selling author of the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Her method requires you to ask yourself one question when deciding to keep, toss, donate, or sell an item; “Does it spark joy?” I haven’t even read her book yet and my life is already changing! I’m serious! (The book is on order, but has not arrived yet!)
Even though, I have not read her book yet, I have already started using her method, to de-clutter and purge, thanks to a little site called YouTube! Through YouTube I have been able to see how her method has worked for others and therefore apply it to my own situation.
So, far I see two main differences with the Konmari method of decluttering vs. other methods that I have tried.
- You ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” when deciding what to do with an item, and,
- You de-clutter by category rather than by room!
This is huge! Actually, they both are huge, but de-cluttering by category is amazing! I was a bit skeptical at first, but now that I have gone through the method for a couple of categories, I understand it completely.
Back to de-cluttering before Christmas and why that’s a good idea…to make space. It’s just a dang good idea to make space! I have found with four children and a husband no matter how frugal or minimal we try to be around the holidays, it always seems like we acquire way more than we let go of. So, for this holiday season I have set a couple of goals that I would like to share with you and take you along for the ride in future posts, to de-clutter, purge, and make space in our house, and as a result in our minds.
Goals For December 2016
- Go through all my clothes and my four children’s clothes before new years day. Hopefully, my husband will go through his as well.
- Re-organize our storage based on the Konmari method for future de-cluttering.
That’s it. Before the end of the year. After the new year begins, I will tackle the rest of the categories in my house and with all my children and my storage. I challenge you to do the same. Read the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo—or watch the YouTube videos I linked to below—and let the magic begin!
Until next time,
